Depression can be caused by various outside factors that we may not be aware of or think much about. This made me think of another factor that can, for some, create feelings of depression and it can sometimes have to do with adoption. When people are adopted feelings and questions can start to develop. Many times, children or adults feel confused, uncertain, about their adoptive status and are unsure where to turn.
With adoption, you have a child that doesn’t know where they came from; this is one of the things about open adoption that can be very positive, is the children then at least know when they came from. But particularly traditionally when children didn’t know where they came from at all and didn’t have any knowledge of their parents, then they end up with unresolved questions. They also may start feeling that they’re not “like” the adopted family. I can’t tell you how many adopted people have come in, sat down in my office and said, “You know, I grew up in this family and they’re really great people but I felt like I was Baby Huey” because I was so different. They will often go on to say, “the family I was adopted into are great people and they really love me and I really love them, but I’m so different and I don’t understand it.” And so that can cause people to have a sense of “I don’t belong”, or thoughts that I didn’t belong. So again, there’s healing work that can be done around that for people who have been adopted.
