self discovery books

I’ve been asked for book recommendations many times. Sometimes the book to recommend for this or that person is clear. More often, I’m stuck for a name of the author or the book. Most important, each of us is on our unique path of self-discovery and spiritual growth.

There is the tale of a man walking through a book store and, inexplicably, a volume falls from the shelf and lands at his feet. That volume proves then to be exactly the guidance he needs in the moment. I’ve had my own experience of a book that seemed to light up before my eyes as I wandered through some amazing bookstores (notably Powell’s City of Books in Portland and the Peregrine Book Company in Prescott). As recently as a few weeks ago a friend of mine recounted her similar experience of the book that ‘jumped into’ her hands.

And so it begins for each of us. The books I include here are a few of the best self discovery books that have, at some time, set me on fire. Perhaps one of them will do the same for you. Most of these authors have written multiple books worth reading. These are their ‘first offerings’ and provide a great vantage point to their ongoing work.

Self Discovery & Spiritual Growth

  1. Byron Katy: Loving What Is: Four Questions That Can Change Your Life, with Stephen Mitchell

Byron Katy was an “ordinary woman” who experienced an extraordinary transformation. During her journey of recovery from anger and depression she developed a personal inquiry process to help others move through negative emotions into peace and forgiveness. I taught the principles of coaching for many years and found Katy’s inquiry process closely akin to effective coaching.

  1. Byron Brown: Soul Without Shame

Byron Brown is a student and teacher of The Diamond Approach developed by A.H. Almaas. It is an extraordinary book on moving beyond the judgmental internal conversations we all learn in childhood. Each chapter of the book concludes with practical and powerful exercises. I consider this book to represent a miracle in print.

  1. John Tarrant: Bring Me the Rhinoceros

bring me the rhinoceros book

Koans (pronounced Ko-ahns) are stories told by Buddhist masters to lead their students toward enlightenment. The koans are puzzling and students meditate and ponder them to discover Truth. Tarrant is an amazing story teller and this book includes a number of well-known koans illuminated with his personal experience and search for wisdom. This book is light-hearted and enjoyable. Tarrant has a great sense of humor and this book contains passages that are LOL inducing.

  1. Caroline Myss, Ph.D.: Anatomy of the Spirit: The Seven Stages of Power and Healing

This first book by Caroline Myss is a wonderful introduction to the world of energy medicine and how emotional health is integral with physical well-being. The book is well laid out, with a chapter devoted to each of the seven primary chakras. Myss discusses the emotional and physical characteristics associated with each chakra and gives a set of questions for self-exploration at the end of each chapter. Myss is a medical intuitive, spiritual teacher and mystic.

  1. Sandra Ingerman:Soul Retrieval: Mending the Fragmented Self

soul retrieval mending the fragmented self

This book marries the ancient shamanic practice of soul retrieval with modern psychology. Ingerman introduces ‘soul loss’ as the source of emotional and physical illness. She describes the process and includes the stories of people who have come to her for help. It is a book that can open your awareness to a powerful alternative modality.

  1. Ron Roth & Peter OcchiogrossoThe Healing Path of Prayer: A Modern Mystic’s Guide to Spiritual Power

This book is about finding your own path of prayer to connect with healing power. It provides instructions to set up a daily prayer and meditation practice. Roth was a Catholic priest for 25 years so this book is set solidly in the Christian tradition. Nonetheless, Roth was foremost a mystic and the Dalai Lama wrote the Foreword for one of Roth’s later books: The Sacred Light of Healing – Teachings & Meditations on Divine Oneness.

Meditation: Sandra Egli
Music: Torey Ronhovde

The wisdom of a thousand generations guides you today. Only listen. Without a sound their voices reverberate in your cells. Settle within and choose your path.

All of us come from strength, fortitude, perseverance. No matter how difficult their lives, our ancestors made it through and passed on life for the next generation. Over and over, until it came to you. The intelligence that guided them has also come to you.

To Thine own Self be true.

If I could present you with a single blessing, it would be the gift of Mindfulness. Awareness of yourself: body, emotions, and self-talk, all the time. Our immediate experience is the ultimate exploration that only grows richer with time. What we do or don't do, and the roots of our behavior, are accessible with the simple practice of noticing immediate experience. It is this practice that makes it possible to know and be true to ourselves.

Sandra's graceful way of listening & non-judgmental demeanor allowed me to open up effortlessly. I was certain, as I left her office, that I had received precisely the healing I needed.
