Happily or not, we accept that our physical characteristics and the genetic strengths and weakness of our bodies are inherited. Some of this we can readily identify, “my mother’s eyes, my father’s nose, my grandfather’s high blood pressure, etc.” Some of our characteristics aren’t so easily traced. These are explained as the result of recessive genes that show only occasionally, such as red hair or mismatched eye colors.

Scientific study has focused tremendous resources on exploring DNA. DNA carries the genes that determine our basic and distinctive characteristics. What has also come to light is that about 90% of our DNA does not contain genetic material. Originally this was called ‘junk’ DNA and more recently renamed non-coding DNA.

Exploring the 90% of Our DNA That Is Non-Coding

Some scientists have observed that the non-coding DNA has language-like patterns. Other research suggests that this non-coding DNA regulates our genes. It may determine if and when a gene is activated. This could be important to understand why the same gene may cause a disease in one person and not another. Recent research has shown genetic changes stemming from the trauma suffered by Holocaust survivors can be passed on to their children.

Whether ‘junk’ DNA is a language that regulates what genes come into play in our lives, it is intriguing to consider that more than just hair color is transmitted through generations. Perhaps the experience and the stories of those who preceded us have been passed down as well, a sort of unconscious diary.

If we allow the possibility that the family, not just the individual members, has a soul or spirit, then surely that soul acts for the well-being and survival of the family. From this perspective passing down the history of a family allows later members to remain true to those who came before them. Remaining true in this context doesn’t necessarily mean following their example. Just as individuals learn from experience, the purpose of a silent diary may be to learn from the past, rather than to repeat it. Such purposes could include atonement, growth, healing, compassion, and evolution.

When children are scarred by physical or emotional abuse, it may seem the only way forward is to reject the perpetrators, often their parents. Sometimes children turn their backs because they disagree with how their parents chose to live. Rejection can have negative consequences. We must be grateful for the life passed to us through our parents and hold the rest in our hearts for healing.

Are You Open To Receiving Gifts From Your Family?

Each of the following examples is true. The first of these is a heartwarming example of the way receiving the gifts of the family can become a beautiful contribution to a person’s life.

This young woman had no idea what she wanted to do and was aimlessly taking courses at a community college. She knew her grandfather had taught music theory. At 19, having never taken a music course nor any instrument training, she decided she wanted to teach music theory. For three years she studied with a tutor devoting herself to making up lost time. At the end, she was accepted into the Masters of Music Theory program in a highly respected university Music Department.

Another, and very different, example is a son who rejected his parents’ strict religious beliefs. He disrespected them for the way they had lived. In his turn he became a fanatic about food, what he would eat and would not. In spite of an increasingly stringent diet, his immune system broke down. He almost died and his health was severely compromised. From a conventional medical perspective, these facts and behaviors may be unrelated. From the perspective of a family soul, this man’s rejection of the gifts and goodness of his parents – in spite of their religious austerity – may be as much responsible for his inability to benefit from the goodness of natural foods as any biological reason.

I am not asserting that choosing to respect our ancestors will save us from the vagaries of the human body. None the less, the sensations of generosity and respect for the life passed to us from our parents and generations of grandparents may be a powerful deterrent to the onset of disease. If non-coding DNA is an “on-off” switch for genetic illness, our emotional state may be a trigger.

This last case is about a man whose father had many affairs. The son saw the hurt it caused his mother and he was determined to never behave as his father had done. Nonetheless, when the son became engaged he began cheating on his fiancé even before the wedding. He could not understand his behavior. Years later he was able only to say that he felt compelled to ‘have a life of my own.’

There is no easy explanation for this set of events. Perhaps the business of secrets and ‘keeping things hidden’ was as much the issue as the cheating. When the son observed his father promoting secrecy to his grandsons the son was determined to end this generational behavior. As a result he began keeping his children away from their grandfather.

Just as important, the son must heal his own drive to have a secret life. He has to repair his relationship with his wife. His wife has her own family history and her part in her husband’s infidelity. Many unfathomable factors bring two people together. These two chose one another, perhaps for the opportunity to bring compassion, atonement, and healing to themselves, their children and the generations to come.

Those who came before us include the wise, kind, and upstanding as well as the foolish, cruel, and criminal. Though we may not know the details, what we can do is acknowledge their lives, their difficulties and sacrifices, even when their stories are unknown to us. When we honor them, we are honoring their souls or higher selves that survive beyond the grave without regard for their good or bad behavior in life. I believe all of the ancestors that came before want us to be happy and will give us their blessing if only we ask for it and bless them in return.

The wisdom of a thousand generations guides you today. Only listen. Without a sound their voices reverberate in your cells. Settle within and choose your path.

All of us come from strength, fortitude, perseverance. No matter how difficult their lives, our ancestors made it through and passed on life for the next generation. Over and over, until it came to you. The intelligence that guided them has also come to you.

To Thine own Self be true.

If I could present you with a single blessing, it would be the gift of Mindfulness. Awareness of yourself: body, emotions, and self-talk, all the time. Our immediate experience is the ultimate exploration that only grows richer with time. What we do or don't do, and the roots of our behavior, are accessible with the simple practice of noticing immediate experience. It is this practice that makes it possible to know and be true to ourselves.
