Finding My Purpose in Life

The latter half of January, new year’s resolutions made or not, kept or forgotten. Thank goodness the Chinese New Year comes later in January (the 28th this year). Though I often reflect and carefully choose a resolution, this year I did not. I’m joyful to be alive. I’m hopeful for the future though I can’t know what lies ahead for finding my purpose in life or the world.

Prioritizing Your Life

finding my lifes purpose

Life is coming at hyper speed and I’m not sure where to allocate my time. What activities to keep in my life, what would I do well to let go? These questions have surfaced as my responsibilities have seemed to explode. My tendency has been to pass over play for obligations. I’m thinking it may be time for a change – and, yet…

This is a good place in which to find myself. It is a lesson unto itself. I cannot unfold a flower; nor do all flowers of a type open the same day. Each flower blooms at the time ordained and for an allotted span. We humans are especially blessed to bloom repeatedly in our lives.

Lessons in Life

self discovery in 2017

It has been noted that the lesson of mortal life is patience. Not indifference, lethargy, or impatience. Rather, to wait on Life with dignity and composure for a sign and a path. A flower can’t be rushed and rushing won’t alter the span of its bloom. It is the same for us and sometimes I remember to slow myself down with the words, “There’s enough time, always enough time, for everything that really must be done.”

Joko Beck tells the story of a man chased over a cliff by a tiger. Grasping an outcrop for dear life he looks to see the tiger’s mate licking her chops below. Just then he spots a ripe and shining strawberry hanging from a bush beside him. He picks the berry, bites and savors the exquisite taste, knowing – as we all do – what comes next.

Popular thinking instructs us to take hold of our lives, set the goals we want and aggressively pursue them. Yet, though our lives are individual, perhaps they aren’t personal. From wherever Life emanates it hasn’t come just to me. It comes to everyone alive and will come to others not yet born. My presence here isn’t to satisfy only me. The greater purpose of Life can be known only by listening to Life Itself.

Trusting and waiting. Attentive and listening. And, occasionally, taking a risk when we aren’t quite sure. In this vein, I dedicate myself to 2017:

greater purpose of life

      Blessed are you, Life.

    I dedicate myself to You.

I rely on Your wisdom and what You bring my way.

I wait on You and ask Your guidance.

Make use of the best that I am and all that I can be.

How fortunate I am that You have come to me.

I give myself to Your service.

The wisdom of a thousand generations guides you today. Only listen. Without a sound their voices reverberate in your cells. Settle within and choose your path.

All of us come from strength, fortitude, perseverance. No matter how difficult their lives, our ancestors made it through and passed on life for the next generation. Over and over, until it came to you. The intelligence that guided them has also come to you.

To Thine own Self be true.

If I could present you with a single blessing, it would be the gift of Mindfulness. Awareness of yourself: body, emotions, and self-talk, all the time. Our immediate experience is the ultimate exploration that only grows richer with time. What we do or don't do, and the roots of our behavior, are accessible with the simple practice of noticing immediate experience. It is this practice that makes it possible to know and be true to ourselves.

Sandra's graceful way of listening & non-judgmental demeanor allowed me to open up effortlessly. I was certain, as I left her office, that I had received precisely the healing I needed.
